National Heart Month

February 1 - February 28

National Hearth Month is an annual event which aims to raise awareness about heart diseases.  It aims to help people think more about the choices they make and how they can help to keep their heart healthy.  This fits in quite nicely with teaching students about basic first aid and how their bodies ‘work’.  All state-funded schools are required to teach first aid as part of health education for all Key Stages.  Primary Schools students will need to know how to confidently make an emergency call and h ow to deal with head injuries and Secondary school pupils will be required to learn further first aid skills such as CPR and the purpose of defibrillators.

When I was delivering these type of lessons, I found that my own basic skills were also lacking, so the lesson plan packs provided by St John Ambulance were a godsend!
