Anniversary of the Titanic Sinking
This is a day dedicated to honouring the lives of those lost in the Titanic tragedy. Of the 2,240 passengers and crew on board, more than 1.500 lost their lives in the disaster on the 15th April 1912. The Captain of the Titanic, Edward John Smith, was born in Hanley in 1850 and lost his life when the ship sank. There is a statue of Captain Smith, which was unveiled in July 1914, in Beacon Park in Lichfield. There are a number of websites which provide information about the Titanic and ideas for teaching:

When Captain Smith was born, he lived at 51 Well Street, Hanley, Stoke on Trent. Pupils could use Google Maps and street view to find the house where he lived.
